« pocksucket:My dad is getting out of hospital!

He has been in since the 15th May when he mistakenly took 6 days worth of his meds in one hit.

Some of you may know and some of you may not know that he is in the late stages of Parkinson's Disease and he has experienced a lot of delirium.

The last four weeks confined in a geriatric ward have not helped this in any way at all - devoid of external stimulation his mind has run away from him. I'd submit that even the most grounded of us would begin to deteriorate if their life was reduced getting out of bed in the morning and sitting in a chair all day waiting until it was time to get back into bed for that long.

But finally he is coming out. If all goes according to plan, a week from today he will be back in his own home with all his familiar things, habits and routines.

I'm under no illusion that this will cure him of his delirium, but it's got to be better for him to be able to do what he wants, when he wants in familiar surroundings.

Hurrah!
You are absolutely right. I've, unfortunately, spent the last few years visiting elderly loved ones and family friends in the hospital.

From heart attacks, to Alzheimer's to cancer, to Parkinson's. Initially, before being accustomed to it, I would get sad and think the worst of their condition when they couldn't remember me, or what day it was, or when they last saw me...stuff like that.

I found that all of them got dramatically better when sent home. Something about the strange place, strange people, drugs, combinations of all, make for severe disorientation.

Glad to here Pops is coming home Big "L", give him my best from over in the SoCal!

Fort Mac's weather forecast:

No weather icon, just fire.

It's funny, but not in a ha-ha way. Both highways that connect the city to anywhere have been closed. If you're not flying, you're not leaving!

But it's funny that Environment Canada made a fire weather symbol, and it's funny that Fort Crack might get burninated.

Two things. Actually yesterday.

Getting my federal tax refund w00t!

Seeing that no one stole the brand new HP all-in-one that was delivered the day before and was sitting outside my apartment door. It was in the original HP box with a UPS sticker slapped on it. They could have just put a "Steal Me" sign on it.

Two things:
1. one of my photos got picked as an honorable mention in the maine.gov summer photo contest. So it'll be on display on the website all summer starting in July.

2. I might be teaching a printmaking workshop in August at an artists' retreat up here in Maine.

Hiked 16km today up into a gorgeous alpine cirque well above the treeline. Saw the shredded fuselage parts of an old plane crash. Had lunch next to a huge waterfall. Saw grizz tracks but no grizz on the way down. Jumped in the freezing river at the end.

I'm so exhausted now, though. The ascent into the cirque was steep.

My bride bought me a new (for me) car for an early Father's Day present. GONE is my 10 year old Oldsmobile with 200,000 miles on the clock. In it's place is a 2 year old Nissan Altima with only 32,000. As an added bonus, she was able to pay cash - no car payments! I'm not just smiling, I have a great big sh!t-eating-grin that you couldn't knock off with a hammer.

I woke up this morning and pulled up my tshirt to check my belly flab (part of my crazy girl ritual since I've started losing weight) to discover "I love you more than anything" written over top of my belly button in Sharpie.

Also, "Yummy!" written on one of my love handles and "You're so hot" written down the side of my leg.

Boy sure knows how to make my day great. :)
