An unexpected side effect of the heat.

Had a conversation with an old friend today and was reminded of what might make an interesting anecdote.

In 1962 I hired an artist to train as a retoucher. He was quite a good artist and a guy with a great sense of humor. His ambition was to become a Broadway stage set designer and after a year or so left my employ to try fulfilling that ambition. However, he had no success with that effort at all. The unions have many NYC crafts totally tied up and that union is one of them. It is pretty much impossible to enter one without a connection of some sort.

He later told me that to earn a few bucks he signed on with a fly-by-night film company that was put together by the director
Del Tenny to film a super low budget horror film called Horror Of Party Beach. His name Is Bob Verberkmoes and he is listed as the Art Director of the film. Actually he was much more but refused to let his name be associated with anything else connected to this mess. :D

In addition to his art direction duties he created the actual monster costume. It was essentially a wet suit with a lot of rubber and vinyl appendages stuck on and a monster head on top. The head was most of the work. He told me he fitted this stuff on while he was wearing the suit and when it was done they found he was the only crew member that it would fit. So he became the monster by default.

He also confessed that one of the girls in the film had lied to the director about her ability to swim. She needed the job but couldn't swim a stroke. So while he was supposed to be attacking this poor "victim" he was actually holding her up so she wouldn't drown.

Bob has been a successful artist in South Africa for many years since.

These are my FAVORITE movies...they always remind me of Saturday afternoons as a kid.
