The man is dead. Love him or hate him he is dead. Personally I couldn't care less about him but I am confused over the mass hysteria following his death. All day long I have listened to his songs on the radio and watched news reports about his death.
This is the major sticking point with me. The first 30 minutes of this evenings news was about a man who was accused of molesting minors, then paid his way out of court, He also hung his young baby over a balcony endangering the childs life.
Then at the end of the news came this report http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8120...
This report is about a toddler who was beaten to death by her babysitter.
Michael Jackson had a poor childhood, of this I am sure but on progressing into adulthood he became responsible of his own actions and the consequences of those actions.
The toddler in question had no childhood, no chance of making herself into a person. Her fragile life was extinguished by some scum who deserves to be strung up.
Why was this man who was hated by so many idolized in his death and a girl who was brutally murdered snubbed for someone had fame thrust upon him then sought it at every turn?
I don't want this thread to turn into a b***hfest about MJ but I do want to understand why people think that he is more important than a toddler who was murdered in such a brutal manner by someone entrusted to care for her.

Because he made Thriller! Before approx 2000 MJ was the quintessential pop icon. After that everyone pretty much takes the stance that Micheal was a different Micheal. We remember him for the star we fell in love with, not the freak show he became after.

OK let me ask you this. Who was Judas?
Was he one of Jesus' chosen disciples who loved and was loved by Jesus Christ, who followed Jesus and supported him and stood alongside Jesus throughout the latter years of his life?
Or was he the monster that betrayed Jesus to the Jewish priesthood thus ensuring Jesus crucifixion?
Society tells me that Judas was remembered for what he did that was wrong and not what he did that was right. Why should MJ be any different?

No one's asking you to like MJ, I was just answering your question. You don't even have to like the answer but its true. MJ's contributions in the worlds of music, dance, and pop culture are what people admire him for. Somehow his transgressions, which are still alleged mind you, are forgiven as a result.
Plus he made Thriller:

« dingbat : Thats what I don't understand. What makes him forgiven? His money and fame. Plus people want to see what other weird sh*t he will pull. Maybe they can forget their own problems for a while if they see that Michael got another new nose and looks more like a female Who from Whoville every day.
If I had gone on national TV as a 40 something year old man and said that I slept in a bed with a non-related 13 year old boy and that all we did was read stories, have milk and cookies and play innocent games, my ass wouldn't see the light of day for the next 50 years at best.
But hey, I didn't write Thriller.

« dingbat : Thats what I don't understand. What makes him forgiven? I wouldn't call it forgiveness. (For the most part) the same people who say he is/was amazing still object to what he became. There really aren't that many fanboys who are willing to truly forgive him (see album sales since 2000).
As much as I hate to bring it up again we also have to remember that he was never convicted for touching little boys. He was also an easy target for a big payout so the families, which also not proven fraudsters, certainly had motive to attempt to fake such a thing. So at the very least we have reasonable doubt.

Everyone seems to focus on the child molestation but very few people talk about the hanging his child out of a window.
That can't be disputed, it was seen all over the world but almost totally overlooked by the authorities and his fans.
I find it upsetting that people can be so fickle as to admire someone like this and stand and defend him because "he made good music?"

Ok, MJ was a star.. then he faded. His notoriety then stemmed from bizarre behavior. He tried to recoup.. but didn't succeed.
He was once famous because of his music.. now he's famous because of his death.
I'm indifferent.

People are defending his actions though. There are people weeping openly on the streets and wondering how their lives will go on without this man in them.
Is it so easy for some to overlook such thing because of the good someone has done?
How low must one sink to offset the high?
To borrow from another thread what about OJ. Hero to many while he was a sportsman but then pretty much universally hated when he was accused and like Jackson cleared of committing a crime. (first time round with OJ).
What is this society becoming where we can allow hero worship of people who don't deserve it? I am not saying that Jackson never deserved the adulation but why after what he has done do we continue to put him on this pedestal?

Suebe,
I don't get it either. People seem to be hysterical over his death. Have they forgotten what has happened over the past few years with him in the media?
To me, his music was just ok. Not a huge fan, but a few songs I can pick out that I liked.
He was too freaky, even before the child molestation accusations, for me to idolize.
This will be all we hear about for the next few weeks. I'm getting ready to turn off my radio. Yea, hearing the songs once is ok, but repeated over and over is just too much.

I am annoyed with the media who loved to villify him for the allegations and now they are completely loving and putting forth all kinds of tributes, kind words and what a great guy he was and pretty much glossing over all the crap he did that was questionable. I don't get it.
Every morning, I watch CNN before I go run. I have a cup of coffee and my breakfast and catch up on the days events. I don't want to watch hours of MJ. He's dead and life is still going on.
I would rather hear about Farrah. To me, that story is more interesting and she was a good person with a huge heart.
