How was the new Harry Potter movie?

Mediocre. Parts were enjoyable, parts were very slow. The whole girls are gaga over Ron thing was over played, I thought. It felt like Ron didn't have much to do with this story line, so they shoved him a love triangle.

I agree with this but then again I have seen how girls in junior high and early high school reacted to zebulor, and in that light it might have even been underplayed.
Immature girls of that age can easily overplay these emotions just to make sure the message sinks in. And even then the guys in this age often don't have a clue. It must be irritating for the girls.

In any other respect the movie was well made. 153 minutes, over 2 hours. It should feel a bit long. At some point it lost my attention, but that could be just because of the rather immature audience around me.

Oh, I didn't say it wasn't realistic, just...Meh. It wasn't amusing enough to make me laugh, it wasn't serious enough to make me care, it just sort of...got in the way.

I liked that magic somehow wasn't central in the movie, unlike in the previous 2 parts it was a completely natural part of the environment.

--------- SPOILERS --------------

I enjoyed how they showed such internal struggle on the part of Draco. When he was crying in the bathroom I wanted Harry to console him rather than attack him, I was genuinely feeling bad for Draco. That is something I wouldn't have expect to be pulled off so easily.

I also remember the relationships between Ron/Herm and Harry/Ginny being way less obvious at this point in the books but I don't exactly recall, its been a while.

I esp enjoy how they keep the other good guys like Ron's parents/brothers and werewolf dude and his wife in your mind so that when the s**t goes down next movie you haven't totally forgotten about them.

The main thing for me was the total lack of build up or explanation for Severus being the half blood prince. They never hinted that it was Severus and rather than reveal and explain it in an interesting way Severus is just like "HELL YA I'M THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE, DEAL WITH IT!" Leaves you with a serious WTF moment that never resolves.

I don't know how to cover up spoilers, and if someone didn't want spoilers they probably wouldn't have opened this thread. So...
Was I the only one that noticed that they took out the ENTIRE point of Draco fixing the cabinet? He did it so the death eaters could... What? Knock out some windows? They don't even try to explain who Greyback is. I understand they couldn't put the whole book in because it was too long, but really?
Some of the things they left out were kinda needed. Most of the parts that they did put in were good.

just edited to add spoiler - tp

I didn't like how Ron's girlfriend, Lavender, was caucasian. In the book, she is African American. I don't know if that's weird to point out but it bugged me.

Also. I didn't appreciate how the whole end part was done. The fight at the castle wasn't really a fight. The trio talking about leaving Hogwarts was underdone. And the funeral. Where was the funeral?

Take the book and seperate it from the movie and the movie was pretty good but look at them side by side...I wasn't a huge fan.

This movie was definitely better than the fourth and fifth movies. I think that it is a lot closer to the book than those movies, so when taken in the context of the other movies, it was great. I just hope that the seventh movie will cover the holes this movie left. Since the seventh book was disappointingly short, and so much of it is taken up with Harry Potter hiding from death eaters with Ron and Hermione and how they try to get along when they hide, I think they should have plenty of opportunity to cover any holes.

7th and 8th--the last book will be broken up in to 2 movies.

This movie felt underwhelming to me, considering the amount of territory they covered (and there were plenty of things they should have expanded on).

It might have been intentional -- perhaps as a bit of relative calm before the storm to come as they wrap up the series in the next two movies?

I wish they had added a few more details so the story made more sense standalone on the screen. A lot of the missing details in the movie had to come from my recollection of the book that I read a couple years ago. (It's a fuzzy memory now, but it gave me a couple of those "oh yeah, I remember that" moments.)

Well, I haven't been to see the movie yet, and you guys aren't inspiring me with a lot of confidence. When the movie came out, I reread the book, and it sounds like I'd be disappointed if I expected the two to be somewhat alike. I know I'm being unrealistic to expect a film to parallel a book as closely as I would like, but you've convinced that I'd be happier waiting for it to come out on video.

that's how it is for book based/inspired movies in general. no movie can be true to the book, especially if the book was written very well. i've heard of one book, "As I Lay Dying," that many major movie companies attempted to make into a movie, but they've never made a satisfying screenplay for the movie to be even halfway decent.

all i ever expect from a book based movie anymore is the special effects. it's been too much to ask anymore to see animated my favorite story scenes.

This is because books pack so much information into them and the pace of a book is much different than a movie's. It's literally impossible to faithfully recreate all in a book directly to the silver screen without sacrificing something. I have not read the Harry Potter books myself, but the movies were entertaining. The last one I did just see last week, and while I wouldn't put it up there with the other movies (it lacked a certain immediacy and focus of plot that the others had), it still was entertaining, and did leave you wanting to see the next movie at the end.

My experiences with the movies from books mostly stem from The Lord of the Rings, which I am an avid fan of (books and movies). Those movies were somewhat faithful, as Peter Jackson did attempt to put as much authenticity from the book into it as he could, but he *still* cut out some huge sections (especially in Return of the King) and even moved part of the 2nd book into the third movie. And even then, the movies were almost painfully long.

I would say, if you want the book, read the book. The movie is a good take on things, usually, but don't expect it to be a book-on-screen. :p

They really should have made 2 movies from the book if they wanted to be faithful to it.
Or a miniseries.
Maybe a miniseries would be the best idea with a full season covering each of the books.

I think anyone who's gonna go expecting to see a copy of the book on video will come out complaining of at least disappointed.

I liked the movie cuz it was a good movie. It had good screenplay, narration, effects and yes, good comedy. The 3 main characters seemed real, altho the Ron-Lav thing was a bit drawn out in a place or two.

Also, they could have spent 5 more mins talking abt horcruxes, Maybe Dumbledore could have said in a brief dialogue what other things he 'thinks' can be horcruxes.

In all 4 stars out of 5. For me the best Potter film yet. Looking forward to the 2 part finale.

I liked the relatively quick pace and action, although those did annoy me sometimes when great atmospheres are quickly broken.

Somewhat diabolical? I suppose...
