I started with 1 _ _ _ _ _ * 3 = _ _ _ _ _ 1 and worked from there. 3 * 7 = 1, putting a 7 in the 10's column for the answer. Carry the 2, 3 * 5 + 2 = 7, etc. I'm sure there's an easier way.

and ummm...Dunno. I have fun with some of them, when they're like this one and I can easily see the solution.

Yep, that is very good.
The other way would be to say that the original number is 100000+a where a is a 5 digit number. When we put the 1 to the end it will be 10*a+1. This is 3 times the original, so
10*a+1=3*(100000+a)
Therefore 7a=299999
a=42857
so the original number is 142857.

Holy cow. It's -9 here with the windchill (that's for 15.8F for those poor souls not acquainted with metric).

Normally, I'd be happy because I love snow, but tomorrow, I'm leaving to live in a tent for a few weeks for work. I am going to freeze my ass off.
