It's their urticating hairs. They kick them at you when they feel threatened, that is why they are less likely to bite. But, yes, they are irritating. But it also depends on the person. Some people don't feel them at all. I do. They feel like little tiny cactus quills or fiberglass.

While walking over to get the car (when I was on the bus) Brad passed a white rock shaped like a heart. He gave this rock to me when got back from school. It is a cute rock, and it made me smile.
