Searches and Dupes

Alright, I posted the article about a MD. lawmaker trying to outlaw "Truck Nutz" last night. It was a dupe - sorry, it happens. I DID do a search but it didn't come up. Perhaps we need some work on the search engine.

So my main question is, why was I voted down to -19? After the dupe is voted past -1, why do people keep downvoting? I understand downvoting something into the basement if you think it's a crap post, but in the case of a dupe this isn't really needed and it comes across as kind of s**tty.

However, this morning Bornbad (who went batsh!t on the dupe) dupes TWO of my posts (the evolution museum and the 5th graders having sex in the classroom) and admits he didn't bother searching. So downvote away, folks. Whatever.

Right:
1)When someone can't be bothered searching (tut, tut, Bornbad), that is just plain lazy.
2)To counteract negative downvotes, people should upvote the edit in the edit history section - this way the creator is spared, and it gets chucked into the deleted pile.
3)The search does need a bit of work, I agree.

Actually, the problem that I see is not with the search engine, but with the keywords that people choose to put in. Have a look at them next time you're checking out a link. How descriptive are they? The more there are, the easier it will be to find and there will be a lower probability of duping.

So, ReBoot, should any Plimp or Plimate who sees drastically undescriptive keywords edit them?

Yes, let's edit the keywords if they are not descriptive enough.

Does the current search go through all categories, or only the currently open one?

One quick test later: no it doesn't, rambler - it searches through all of them.

We freely edit other things that are under par. I'd say yes. If you find a link that has just one keyword, odds are that keyword doesn't do it complete justice.

And I think we all need to get off Bornbad's back now. This site is supposed to be fun, remember?

Thanks, Step, confirms what I had expected. But I, too, posted a dupe recently, after a search with what I thought would the right keywords...
Hmmm.. the answer to the problem must be in better keywords or alternatively in the searching algorithm?

Agreed. I guess our little community will always have a range of people, from smooth diplomats to rough diamonds ... Variety is the spice of life.

Does the search engnine only search the keywords, then? It might help if it searches the titles & descriptions, too. Keywords can be subjective.

Is a repost of the same story from a different source considered a dupe?

Has anyone tried copy-and-pasting the link address into the searchbar?

UVd...hope that take some of the edge off the DV's.
I don't think we need to smash accidental dupes either.

Hmmm ... a post of the same story from a different source COULD be presenting a different viewpoint too - should NOT be a dupe in my view.
Judgement call needed then, not just a quick glance at the title.
Often, however, the eventual publishers/papers/sites have bought the same news from the same source.

Hmmm. Interesting. I was downvoted for that. I wonder why. :)

I don't know why, but I upvoted you back. Your comments are valid.

You're right. If the viewpoints are different it should not be considered a dupe. Problem is, many a blogger copy/paste news articles from CNN.com (and other news sites) and proclaim them as their own despite them being identicle. If the content differs enough, it's not a dupe.

Also, I think it was Voodoo who asked why you continue to get neg votes even after you hit -1? I downvote till it's off to deleted land (I'm not sure where exactly that occurs, but I know it's further down than -1).
