I found this, which I think contains everything:

2 questions, and pardon me if they're covered elsewhere. I've scanned this thread from the start, and didn't notice an answer to them.

#1. Just out of curiosity, a request for clarification:
What is the "Popular" tab for?
The Popular tab is a way you can see the most popular posts. A post can get to the popular page by receiving multiple votes. This is not based on rating only on popularity. (can popular posts get removed from the popular page?)
I take this to mean that it's the number of Plimates who upvote, not their votes' cumulative score on the submission, that moves an entry to the Popular page.

Is that correct? And if so, how many (up)voters must a submission have to be moved to the Popular tab?

#2. A suggestion, take it or leave it.
How do I change the style of the font in my comments?
Plime interprets some common tags, placed in brackets.
b and /b around a word make it bold.
i and /i around a word make it italic.
I've seen the strike tag used here and there. Any value in adding strike and /strike to the FAQ thread? (or reason to not add it?)

I think you're the only user in the history of plime who's actually gone through the FAQ and followed all the start up rules. Bravo.

About Plime
Plime is an editable wiki community where users can add and edit weird and interesting links. Users earn karma when other users vote on their actions. The more karma you have, the more power you have at Plime.

Heh! I hope not, but thank you. It must be the effects of my time in the Worth1000's Netiquette and Site-Culture Self-Education program that's showing-through. :D

It is the karma that influences the inclusion on the popular tab. Not number of upvotes, but the amount of karma that hass been applied to the news post.

You're right that that is a little unclear; care to revise it? I'll gladly edit any suggested text and/or additional questions to the list. If not I'll get around to rewording that one.

Yes, strike is another option. There are a few more actually; but we have a thread that demonstrates the many things you can do. I should probably edit in a link to that thread as part of the answer to that question.

Thanks, Jago.

Thank you for the invitation. Maybe something like this, as a basis, open to change:

The "Popular" tab is where you'll find the most popular posts that were submitted to the All links page. "Popularity" is based on the cumulative score from other Plimates who upvote the post. A post must reach a score of at least X before it will show-up on the "Popular" page.

Which modifies my original question a bit. Still just curious: what is "X", the magic number an entry must achieve to move to the Popular page?

It changes, on slow days low scoring stories can be moved to the front page but on other days where the level of voting is very high it has to be a higher number.

That's what I have noticed anyways.

Is it the Karma points only? I thought it involved the total number of clicks and/or upvotes (too). I think I remember Jax said so somwhere, but I really don't know.

Qualification for the front page is based on relative popularity, which is to say that the number of votes required to make the popular page is (at least mostly) determined not only by the amount of karma that story gets, but also by the amount of karma other concurrent stories are getting.

It's pretty much explicit in the term "popular" - this being a relative term at all times. Well, except if you're talking about a model of Ford

The exact mechanism doesn't really matter as it's utterly non-negotiable. It just happens. Perhaps this would make a suitable explanation:

What is the "Popular" tab for?

The Popular tab is where the cream of Plime rises to. The popularity of a submission or story is initially determined by the voting score it receives relative to other posts i.e. whether it is more or less popular than the stories around it.

The Popular tab lists stories in order of appearance; the top spot is occupied by the most recent story to become popular, which then drops down one when the next story becomes popular. The amount of votes received does not affect a story's position on the Popular tab.

Stories and submissions will be removed from the Popular tab if they receive enough down votes.

The main reason the BBCode issue isn't in the first few pages of the FAQ is that up until Jax broke made a bunch of changes to things we had a whole FAQ section instead of just one thread (that's what the first few comments on this page and the last few on the previous page are about).

One of the threads in the FAQ section was this one in which Ogri came up with an ingenious solution to the problem of representing the various code tags without Plime rendering them.

There's no real reason now why that image can't be incorporated into this thread.

If you're interested in the further read, here are a bunch more that Suebe collected into one place for us.

Hope that helps, excellent question.
That was my question! And may I commend Jerry520 for his excellent contribution in a recent thread on how to submit links, videos, photos, quotes, spoilers etc. I need to make a miniposter of that and hang it on my wall, but can't find it... HELP??

Excellent, thank you. And I confess I did see Suebe's thread while Googling for the this thread, but had forgotten about it by the time I finished reading here. Will bookmark it for the future.

I'm not 100% clear on what the algorythem is for it, but it's based on the comparitive karma of the links around it. For instance if lin1 is at 34, link 2 is at 99, and link 3 is at 40; link 2 is probably going to the popular page.

Don't know if it's been said before or not, but how about we get a thread that has no excess comments and remake the FAQ. Instead of having to read through everything, how about put all related questions in a comment box together and in the original post, link to everything. Something like:

The Basics <-That would be a link to a comment box later on
Images, bold, italics, etc <-link
Community guidelines <-link

etc...

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. I tried to find a better example but couldn't. I like how at the bottom of the original post, there are highlighted questions that take you to other comments in the thread.

As I said elsewhere, I'm busy creating something similar right now. So if you're willing to wait until maybe the end of the week, you can check it out and decide whether you like it, instead of starting now and doing the same work simultaniously.
