Oh hell, there's no suspense in any of this. I'm 44.

Beany I'm going to share some advice that my father gave me. It was unpalatable at the time (about your age) but now he's just a tad younger than Bornbad and I'm just a tad older than...some others here, and I get it. So, whether you like it or not, the "world does not owe you a damn thing".

That's what it means to be a grown up. Knowing that you are and will always have to be your own person and be responsible for that person. If mom and dad won't buy you a car then you'll have to go and buy one yourself because they don't owe you one and no one else in this world owes you one either.

Prove you're ready for the responsibility of adulthood and adult decisions and don't blame the 'rents.

Can you come talk to my stepson? He's one of the most "I'm owed everything and I don't have to do anything" kids I've ever met. He's almost 19 and my head is bloody from the constant wall banging. He's three weeks from not graduating because he just doesn't care.

Mind if I print out what you said and tape it to the refrigerator? He's sure to see it there.

Heh, my dad repeated that statement over and over again. It took a long time for it to sink into me (though honestly, I just pretty much wanted to be left alone as a kid, I don't recall wanting much material things as I did just the freedom to be wild and do stupid things without parental intervention).

Feel free to post it on the fridge, but dad does get all the credit because when it finally sunk in, I GOT it.

I wasn't going to pour salt in beany's wounds, but I paid for my car at 16, also, after buying a new moped at 15 with paper route money (hey, it gave me my freedom). My car, though, sat in the garage for 9 months right after buying it because I was too ignorant to be sure I wasn't buying a lemon.

Didn't make that mistake again.

EDIT: Oops, accidently quoted myself instead of editing. Sorry.

dolly, I'll sign it DelArt. That will confuse the kid. ;) Is he going by DelArt1 now?

Sorry, didn't mean to be that blunt, but yeah, cherish your youth, you'll never be as carefree :)
