«steelshooter : 1986 Pontiac 6000 Looks like a boat, 4-cylinders. Has less than 50,000 miles, cost me under $1500 and gets 25-30 mpg. Downside is that it accelerates like a snail. . . .
I always jokingly said that this car wanted to be a tank when it grows up. I always assumed that with a 4-cylinder engine that it must be aluminum and would bend if it ever hit anything really heavy.
Thursday night, on my way home, I hit a dead deer with this car. I swear that I actually got air-born.
NOT A SCRATCH. No damage at all. I do have a nice coat of fur on the gas tank now, and I had to pick something gooey off my exhaust manifold, but nothing is bent and it still runs like a champ.
Anyone have suggestions for a new car? I'm in the market and need tips on how to get the best price, best car for me and whatnot.
Here's the catch: I may not be able to actually go to the dealership (my dad, who's helping me with the process probably will have to go without me). Any recommendations on finding a car online/in a different city?

I had a really great experience with Carmax. Don't know if everyone else has had the same, but I bought my 2003 (bought in 2005) Volvo S40 for well below list, had it shipped in for an extremely nominal fee (something like $150 from TN to NC). They were all super friendly, easy to work with, and the website is set up really well (great search features). Haven't had any problems with the car.
We currently have a 98 Isuzu Rodeo and a 98 Chevy Cavalier. I LOVE my car. It has almost 150k miles and still runs strong. The only issue I have with it currently is the flat tire in the front....dang screws/nails.
I drive a 1994 Honda Accord station wagon, which I did NOT pick out for myself, my husband bought the car. (I would have bought a champagne/gold poptop Chrysler Sebring.) Her name is Rhonda.
She's been rear-ended twice, and hit in the front left quarterpanel by an airborne rock, all requiring replacement and repainting. I replaced the windshield last month due to nicks that turned into a massive crack.
The speedometer quit working about 4 years ago at 150,000 miles. I bought a new one at the dealership and had my mechanic put it in. The odometer on the new speedometer quit working 99 miles later, so back to the dealer, who refuses to do anything because they didn't install it. I raised hell, so they gave me a new speedometer, and admonished me to bring the old one back when I get the new one installed (yeah, right.)
She probably has 250,000 miles on her, has a few places where the paint is peeling (on the replaced parts, not the original paint), and I got a new nick in my windshield on my recent road trip. But Rhonda is a trooper, and runs like a champ. She'll probably be around another 100,000 miles. (Please?)
Kakana saw her. I'll post pics later for the rest of you, after she gets washed. :D
I drive a 1995 GMC Sonoma with almost 200,000 miles on it. GM calls this color Radar Blue Metallic but in the sunlight, it looks seriously purple. We affectionately call it Barney.
The 86 Lincoln is my favorite car ever since. At that point it did not have AC and exhaust pipe. I have fixed the exhaust in January, the AC next year, so in 2000 summer I could enjoy the Texan heat without doing much noise pollution. Unfortunately the maintenance started to rise steeply, I ended buying a Chevrolet Prizm in 2001, and my monthly payments were less than the maintenance was with the lincoln. From the money I saved on gas, I could pay the insurance.
The Prizm's engine cracked in two 2000 miles after the warranty expired. I got a cheap used engine in it and we still use it.
