On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death.

I love my Xbox. And as Boneheaded as MS is with their hardware failure, I think Sony is even worse shooting themselves in the foot on purpose. Case in point: with the Blu-Ray format winning the HD war, I am now in the market for a Blu-Ray player. Should I pay almost $400 for a stand alone, or for $100 more get a PS3? PS3 is a no-brainer, right? WRONG! Sony, in their infinite "we know what you want better than you do" wisdom, has decided that they are going to eliminate their 60GB SKU, leaving only the 40GB available, which is NOT backwards compatible. So I get to keep my PS2 forever, and find a way to fit a PS3 in with my PS2, my Wii, my 360, my receiver and my cable box? No. I will just buy a Blu-Ray 360 when they drop in the summer. If I could drive 10 minutes and get a PS3 that would play my PS2 games and save me a spot on my entertainment shelf right now, I would do it right now. Now who's the bonehead?

If I could drive 10 minutes and get a PS3 that would play my PS2 games and save me a spot on my entertainment shelf right now, I would do it right now. Now who's the bonehead? First, the 40GB model is backwards compatible with PSOne games. I know those are few and far between on availability, but I still have all of mine. Also, since the 80GB model's backwards compatibility is only a firmare upgrade, do you really think that Sony won't eventually have a downloadable firmware upgrade in the future for the 40GB model? You would have to be very naive to believe that they wouldn't.
Second, the 40GB model is only $400 so you wouldn't need to drop the extra $100. Also, the 60GB has been off the radar for a few months now. They have an 80GB model, though. I would also like to add that I NEVER said it was a 'no brainer' but the press and critics have already forcast that PS3 sales will most deffinitely jump due to the back oot of HD DVD. If you don't want a PS3 because it isn't backwards compatible, fine. No sweat off my sack. But a PS3, whether backwards compatible or not, is still a much better value than a stand-alone Blu-ray player in that it will ALWAYS be upgradable to the next version of Blu-ray.
Thirdly, all of the systems you have are able to be set upright in a verticle position, which does make a great space saving option. I waill also say that the 'bonehead' comment was only a joke. There is no reason to get so bent oot of shape.
One more thing... I, as well as most consumers, would rather have a system that has a very low failure rate and no backwards compatibility, than a system that has a 16.5% failure rate. Besides, most people who have PS2 games also have a PS2. I have the 60GB model so I have no complaints in any way, shape or form. My PS3 is also quieter, cooler (temperature) and has more features than those other systems. This isn't a boasting debate, these are just the facts.

I wasn't trying to be combative at all, so lets go over this one point at a time.
It's not that I'm so naive to think that they won't someday make the 40GB SKU backwards compatible, but the Emotion Engine software emulation is not compatible with as many titles as the Hardware emulation. The extra $100 I was referring to was the price I would be more than willing to pay to have that hardware emulation.
The "no brainer" comment was my own personal rhetoric... I wasn't trying to attribute that to you.
When I used your "bonehead" reference, it was out of frustration with the way Sony has played a "shell game" with their PS3 SKUs since day one and was in NO way meant to be combative of your use of the word.
I just don't understand why they would eliminate the 60GB with the Hardware compatibility, since at a price of $100 more than a stand alone Blu-Ray, it IS (IMHO) a no brainer to buy the PS3. As far as the PS3 having more features, I think it's a give and take... I like the rumble included with 360 controllers, and Xbox Live is an amazing service... part of the reason I would never part with my 360.
Bottom Line: You are one of my favorite Plimates. I respect your opinions & enjoy your sense of humor. I am honestly distressed that you took my post personally, and I apologize for coming across that way. I can assure you it was COMPLETELY unintended.
Tell you what, let's forget aboot this, and let me buy you a Molson next time I find myself in Canada, eh? :)

Cool. And while I am a die-hard Xbox360 fan(boy) I still long for a PS3. I own a Windows Tower and 3 Windows laptops, but one of them has a hard drive partition that runs a fully functioning (although sound and wireless-less) version of OS X Leopard, and as early as today, I may be buying a MacBook. So I guess what I am saying is I have NO personal convictions. Like a jellyfish, I just float around and go with the current...LOL!
I'm glad we got this settled quickly. I would have hated to delete my old Bryan Adams songs off my iPod, and remove TSN.ca from my bookmarks toolbar in the inevitable anti-Canada backlash resulting from our flamewar. And not watching curling in the upcoming Winter Games... heresy! Worst of all, I would have had to move to Mexico... MEXICO if the Republicans win a third term in November.
