I have also heard a radio show version where they read 1 chapter every Thursday evening. That one was nice too, even if I could not catch each chapter.The overall story arc of DQ is quite minimal, being far more episodic, so that would work.
I get through a lot of audio books as well as conventional books as they let me "read" when I'm doing things that would normally prohibit (driving, digging, that sort of thing) so I may look into that, but not for a while.

I think I was cursed with a very dry translation (J.M. Cohen) that didn't so much accentuate the humour of it, at least to begin with. Oddly it lightened up over the last 150 pages or so; perhaps Mr Cohen's mood brightened when he realised he didn't have much more to go.
I've spoken to other people who have read other translations and they give the impression that it was a lot funnier than I found it, which is a shame as I'm unlikely to have another stab at it.
I think the other thing that makes it harder to read is that originally it would have been published in pamphlet form, pretty much a chapter at a time. This makes it very episodic in nature, which is fine if you read a chapter every few months over the course of maybe a decade.

Well, well...it was a huge f**kin cockroach crawling on the ceiling towards my head. It was either a super cockroach or the fan helped him fly, but it flew straight towards my head and I must admit, I LOST IT!! My dog and cat were scared for their lives. I'm allowed to be scared of some things okay?!!
