It wasn't until the 40's with the invention of the in-car speakers that the idea really took off. By 1958, the number of drive-ins peaked at 4,063. All of the kids would pile into one car and our moms would sit together in the other. Even the concessions are cheaper than a regular movie!

Posted: 4 months ago by suebe: I used to drive my big old '65 Mercury Monterrey, put a couple of guys in the trunk until we passed the ticket both, then let them out to save on admission. Always loved the concession promotional films and the countdown clock to the next movie.
There are none left in NY metro area. One someplace in Delsea, NJ-the last holdout in NJ.
