So why are they bothering to compile a list?

s**t, I could write a short story based on the year where I had no car and had to walk to work. The days were uneventful, but if I added some ninjas and dinosaurs to spice things up, it would still be "based" on that year where I had no car and had to walk to work.

I'm surprised they aren't attacking the even more loose term "inspired by", which opens a whole nother can of worms.

The thing is, every movie that has ever been made was either based-on or inspired-by actual events.

5dollarmilkshake @ 7/9/2008 4:52:11 PM

Story time! My high school dean was Rudy's (real life Rudy's, not Sean Astin's) brother. I got in trouble for something one day and had to go to his office. That allows the vaguest of connections between what actually happened and what goes on in the film.

Braveheart was "inspired" in the fact the yes, there was a big Willy Wallace and yes, he did kill englishmen who eventually had him executed. As far as that goes it was true. The rest was cinema fairytale, not in itself a bad thing as it was a good movie but it certainly wasn't accurate.

2manyusernames @ 7/9/2008 1:57:18 PM

Yes, Hollywood lies. Yes stories are stretched to be more dramatic.

Some movies are more accurately labeled a dramatization of a real story.

What makes these stand out is the huge difference in the real story versus the actual one.

Differences so vast that they are no longer even close to be true, that they are hit with successful lawsuits.

Something of these differences changes the entire fabric the movie is based on.

theclansman @ 7/9/2008 1:38:42 PM

haha reminds me of when I was a kid and we watched the perfect storm and I kept asking my parents how they knew any of that s**t happened if the boat never made it back...

It was then I realized that movies based on true stories were as much fiction as any others, my hatred for the English went down a few notches (thank you braveheart and the patriot).

2many also posted a vid proving that the moon landings were fake, I guess Apollo 13 should be on this list as well.
