I was inspired to look for something like this, after this post.

According to the Maryland Constitution, atheists are not allowed to hold public office or give testimony at a trial. Fortunately, all such laws were declared to be in violation of the US Constitution and therefore unenforceable by the Supreme Court back in the 70s.

Won't cite many specific states, but a lot of places have 'blue laws' on the books that still baffle me. In Colorado, that means no car dealers are open on Sunday. Is it seriously sinful to buy a car on Sunday? No buying 'real' booze on Sundays either. Somehow 'full strength' beer is sinful, but 3.2 isn't?

The liquor blue law is no longer in effect starting July 1st. Which means I can get totally blitzed on Sunday now, but I still can't buy a car.

I notice that many of these take legitimate laws and rephrase or exaggerate them to make them sound trite and silly. Some are just plain made up!

I live in AZ:

I had to look it up to make sure it didn't ruin the camel hunting trip I had planned for this weekend. Sorry. :p

Which is probably a good thing, if you think about it. The other way around would be just fine.

A man can legally beat his wife, but not more than once a month.
Sure, tell that to the police.

I grew up in Alabama and thought a lot of the one's listed for there were funny. However, I must contest one.

"It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehichle."

I'm sorry, but the lawmakers go that one right. Unless, you know, you want people to be doing that. The visual effects and noises of the crash would be fun at least.

In Utah It is against the law to fish from horseback,or cause a catastrophe, also it is illegal to detonate any nuclear weapon. You can have them, but you just can't detonate them. Now I ask how is a guy like me to have any fun?

Oh snap. I'm totally married. This might be an issue.

In AZ there is a very necessary law protecting the Saguaro cactus...if not the tourists would cut them down and steal them all away from us!!! Also, we have to protect them from extinction. There are large fines and possible jail time for destroying or stealing one. Although right now there may be many; they take years to grow and they support all kinds of wildlife.

We love our Saguaros.

Uh oh.
"In the state of Washington, there is a law against having sex with a virgin under any circumstances."
and
"Men who deflower virgins, regardless of age or marital status, may face up to five years in jail."
It's a wonder our population here hasn't dropped off entirely. Apparently, we must all be non-virgins!

« bcgrote : One thing many folks don't realize is that the original definition of "sodomy" included oral contact! In fact, the UCMJ still identifies oral copulation as sodomy.

And it is still illegal in several states.
Good call.

Let me quote:
"925 ART. 125. SODOMY
(a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration , however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense.
(b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct. "

As far as I know it does not define "unnatural" anywhere,
according to the general guidelines therefore
"unnatural" means what is generally accepted as unnatural. This is not an outright categorization of oral sex as sodomy, however oral sex might fall in that category depending on several factors.

Yikes, it could also include "woman on top" or "doggie-style" or use of "props" of any kind, from lingerie to leather, depending on the prudishness of the person deciphering the law! Although I would hope that 'generally accepted' would include BDSM nowadays!

Hubby and I are still planning a "sodomy tour" of various states in this great nation. We'll bring along various toys and have a completely unnatural time!

Hmmm, in the late 80's, the UCMJ did include oral specifically and by name in its definition of sodomy... Could the military actually be catching up with modern times? GASP!

Although on page 378 of the Manual for Courts-Martial, found in your quote link, the explanation of sodomy is given as:
"c. Explanation. It is unnatural carnal copulation for
a person to take into that person’s mouth or anus the
sexual organ of another person or of an animal; or to
place that person’s sexual organ in the mouth or
anus of another person or of an animal; or to have
carnal copulation in any opening of the body, except
the sexual parts, with another person; or to have
carnal copulation with an animal."
