... but viewers are outraged that her prince appears White.

While some have hailed Disney’s decision as a reflection of melting pot America, others say the company is sending out a mixed message. picked by bingo 9 months ago

It would be news if this wasn't news.

That a fuss is being made speaks volumes about the race issue.

It is exciting to see the first black princess. It is something that hasn't been done before in Disney history.America is a melting pot. So it's good to see a representation of various races through media. I was wondering though why was the prince made to look white?

But really why should this matter... the point is disney is trying something different. This is at least one step in a new direction. I applaud it!

They should've used me, I'd be a sweet Disney character, and yes.. Ebony Black also reminds me of hXc pron, I think I've seen it. But yea I think the people that were pissed about this would be more pissed if it was a black prince and a white princess so they should be glad disney didn't do that yet..

But once mcdonalds buys out disney in a few years we're going to start seeing cooler movies, like snow white goes to the ghetto or sleeping beauty wakes up in L.A. Maybe Pochahontas goes to the casino..

If I hadn't read this I probably wouldn't have really noticed.
And I still don't care.
*shurg*

I hope they get a black voice actor for the prince and a white actress for the princess. Just to see if anyone cares about that.

So true! What would be news is when it doesn't have to be touted as extraordinary that Disney has a black character. But if it was normal I guess it wouldn't be news. That didn't mean to be so complicated...

OH! CRY. ME. A. RIVER!

This goes to show that there are a LOT of people who really can't get past the mixed race issue...

There are a lot of RL couples (famous or not) that are mixed couples... Seal and Heidi klum for example...

The "outrage" against non-black prince seems to be more about opposition to mixed race relationships by some racist individuals.

Crying racism when you're a racist doesn't get you very far.

Disney seems to try and represent multiple cultures, and ethnic groups.. But I always thought the closest thing they would have would be The Lion King. It struck me odd for a long time that they never had a black cartoon character in their collected, but I guess after nearly 5 decades of equality Disney is stepping up.

Mama Odie, the 'good' voodoo priestess of the bayou, from the film
HAH! I'm surprised this isn't getting more panties in a twist.

Originally called The Frog Princess, its heroine was to be a chambermaid called Maddy working for a spoilt white debutante in 1920s New Orleans.

But the storyline sparked a backlash from critics who claimed it reinforced prejudice and demeaned black people.
Ok, maybe not the brightest move. Sure Africans don't usually have the traditional princesses and castles we are so fond of in European culture.. but really?

The princess’s original name was perceived by some to be a stereotypical ‘slave name’ and she was also a maid working for a wealthy white boss, which was criticized as being racially insensitive.
I thought Tiana was a lovely name.

Even the New Orleans setting for the film was questioned as it had overtones of voodoo and slavery.
Yeah, that is some pretty big fail on their part. I figured when they finally used a black woman as a main character it would involve some traditional African myths and story's, especially since so many are pretty interesting and could easily work for Disney.

Edit: here is the teaser

The name people were upset about was "Maddy." I thought that was pretty, too... I don't know about the slave pet name idea, though.

I was most confused by "First American Princess!"
...You know why we don't have American princesses? We don't do royalty over here. *headdesk*

I was in two black-white relationships, and I heard some of these negative comments, that I should let my boyfriend "be free to date a black woman." ... Um. He chose to date me. I wasn't making him, and I wasn't part of a conspiracy to keep all the intelligent black men from being interested in black women. We just clicked.

That was hard for some people to understand.

You remember it is fantasy, yes?

Sure it's fantasy, but it's fantasy based on a certain culture and with a general historical background. Most Disney stories are modified fairy tales or traditional stories.

The princess obsession is relatively new. (in that they only started marketing the specific Disney princess line recently... and got stuck on heroines like Mulan who weren't really princesses. But they made them into "princesses.")
