Glad Capt. Phillips in on his way home.

With all the might in all the Navies of all the countries that have had ships hijacked, why can't they put a stop to this?

The million dollar question, I wish I could understand the logic/reasoning behind all the INaction. My guess tho is that the pirates aren't the real issue, they're just the visible and superficial part of the larger problem..and blowing them out of the water would lead to an all-out war with their 'employers'. Something no country is apparently willing or able to become involved in at this point in time.

And yes, yay! for a happy ending!

Because an area 5 times the size of Texas is not easily patrolled.

Unless a corridor is created, specifically to protect all ships, I don't see it becoming easier.

Merchant ships 'back in the day' used to carry Cannons, muskets, and swords. They defended themselves against Pirates.

Couple of Maersk/Sealand ships with stinger missiles and the pirates would probably leave them alone for good.

...and it even makes economic sense. A single missle is probably cheaper than the lost days at sea, plus ransom that would need to be paid.

The message would be clear. "STAY AWAY FROM US SHIPS."

Yay! I'm happy for him and his family! I hope they have a wonderful Easter.

I think that we should get the internet to sponsor some ninjas to go fight the pirates.

It's ridiculous that merchant marine vessels don't carry weapons to defend themselves in this day and age. Hopefully that will change soon and these pirate criminals will have to shut down. Unfortunately, they are a symptom of a larger problem (extreme poverty and a corrupt government) and that'll have to be addressed too.

they have over 200 hostages on other commandeered ships, life could get very unpleasant for at least some of them shortly. The Obama administation's intentionally vague statement that they are "taking steps" to address the piracy problem sounds pretty ominous to me. Hopefully we're not about to spread our military even thinner.

My wife was wondering why they showed old pictures of him on the news for so long after they rescued him. I told her it's because I'm sure they had to get his story straight in debriefing to justify capping the f-ing pirates which I'm sure they wanted to do from day 1. :)

Then I had to laugh when the news lady on that post mentioned that initially they weren't sure what the "eminent danger" was to cause the military to act.

My answer...I don't care. They're dead. They deserved it. Don't mess with the US.

I guess this means Sully is off the hook now. The media found a new hero. Glad he is safe, but the media is going to be all over him for months for guest appearances, speaking to Congress, throwing out the first baseball..... it's endless. I hope he tells the media to bugger off.
