I don't find it offensive at all, and I'll agree it's one situation most guys find themselves in at least once.

(Does this avatar make me look fat?)

And to be completely honest...when we are in that situation, a beer is nice to have.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it had received three complaints from people...
They had THREE complaints and they are banning the ad? Wow.

Maybe if we send in ten complaints that they pulled it, they would put it back up.

From a psychology point of view, this could be a Rorschach test.

Those who are thinking he is 'going to take advatange of her' are already along those lines in their thoughts...

When did they learn that they need beer for courage to take advantage of women? Why do their thoughts drift towards that when they see this advertisement?

Kind of reminds me of an old joke.

Psychologist shows an inkblot to a man, the man says it looks like two people in bed. So he shows the man a second inkblot, he claims it looks like a naked woman.

At this point the Psychologist tells the man he's obsessed with sex. The man looks at the doctor and says "Well, you're the one with the dirty pictures!"

I'm reminded of the story of a traveling preacher telling the congregation to "take courage". Not realizing that this would offend the tea-totaling congregations.

This isn't about "a shy young man's confidence with women". It's about drinking so he can find the courage to insult her appearance.

I just think it's great that he's a specimen of total physical perfection. Otherwise I'd think he was a hypocrite, and this was a sexist ad.

Wow, it doesn't look anything like that to me. It's like the snickers commercial where the girl asks a guy if she looks fat in stretch pants. He looks like he wants to avoid offending her, and have to face her wrath.

That, and many other situations.
