He worded it poorly - both in a polite manner and grammatically but he has a point. If you aren't a practicing Catholic and you don't plan on attending some sort of church function or otherwise acknowledging the holiday in a way other than sleeping in and going fishing you really don't have any business taking the day off.

If someone is not Jewish, Muslim, or a Odin worshiper, then there is no reason for them to take off that religion's holiday.

He's an ass - that's for sure, just pointing out that he had a point and that the actions of the employees isn't a whole lot better.
