Toyota blindsided by safety complaints about hybrids
Toyota blindsided by safety complaints about hybrids
Hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius are so quiet that blind people can't hear them coming, and the National Federation for the Blind says this creates a significant safety hazard. picked by Wingnut 3 years ago

A friend of mine drives a hybrid Highlander, and he says sneaking up on people is one of his favorite things about it!

Of course, I'm much too mature to do that with my Prius. ;)

Well... they make deer whistles...

I'm kidding. So, there *IS* one good reason to blare obnoxious music while cruising around downtown...

Right! My husband is eager to drive in 'stealth mode' most of the time.

The ambient noise in Laguna Beach must have gotten loud over the years; I've heard the Prius in stealth mode. Not the normal car noise, but there is a sort of eerie feeling sort of noise when it approaches...

And a blind person with a guide dog should be ok, like this guy had... otherwise, I would like to believe a Prius driver would stop for a guy with a cane who was in or at a crosswalk.....other cars do!

I feel like I'm missing something.
The guy was nearly hit, by "half an inch" he says.

So the problem doesn't seem to be the fact that the car is so quiet - the problem seems to be that either the driver was driving illegally and recklessly, zooming through intersections when a pedestrian was leagally (another question) in the crosswalk, or that the blind man had a poorly trained guide dog. Maybe people can't hear it, but I refuse to believe the dog couldn't.

Either way this isn't the car manufacturer's fault.

Actually, this will become an issue in the future, not just for blind people.

Everyone uses his/her hearing for navigating throught traffic, so it does pose a problem if you can't hear the damn thing.

Either way, a sound generator would solve the problem (Notice how futuristic cars in movies have got this nice wirrrrr sound that makes them sound futuristic ? They could use that. )

BullSh*t! I try to sneak up on every blind person I see and I haven't been able to slap a blind back-of the head yet! I've got lots of cane welts to prove it!

And how does this dude know he was missed by half an inch? HE'S BLIND! besides, blind people can teleport, they just do it really sneaky-like! So screw those blind people! They're just messin' with our heads! :)

!!!!!!! (just for good measure)

I think that the whole thing is just a big whine. What do blind people do to avoid bicycles that drive right up next to the curb, are slient and don't give a damn about traffic signals, crosswalks and SIGHTED people?

Hey Runni... Are these two comments related, somehow :-0
