Mercury - It's The New Mars!
Mercury - It's The New Mars!
The planet Mercury we were led to believe in, a cold, dark and dead place, is the furthest thing from the truth. NASA's Messenger orbiter is sending thrilling details of a vibrantly active globe filled with magnetic tornadoes, gigantic volcanoes and something called a plasma funnel that I cannot wait to find out more about. picked by equinox 7 months ago

How could people think Mercury was cold or dark? Isn't it closest to the sun?

The only pictures we had close up of Mercury came from the 1970 Mariner 10 fly-bys. They had some big technical problems for one thing, only 1/4 pixels of the image data returned and the geomagnetic storm they flew through seemed to pretty much destroy the imaging process by the third fly-by. Most pictures we got to see were heavily corrected and pretty moon-like.

LOL!

It's a dry heat - just like my oven....

But man, I'd LOVE the solar energy franchise there!

That's what I'm thinking, too. Of course it has no atmosphere, and I seem to remember that doesn't spin on it's own axis (like Earth does) so one hot face is always towards the Sun and the other side would be pretty cold.
