Who would have expected "that" kind of reaction to environmental contaminants. I'm kinda' curious why they don't see similar deformities in other arctic wildlife.

yeah, sounds very fishy. I would love to know who hired the "researchers".

They do, but since polar bears are 'majestic' and 'romantic' they get all the media attention. No-one cares about the high toxins in beluga whales (or humans for that matter; who cares about northern dwellers?!?).

These chemicals tend to accumulate in fats, and since the polar bears are the tops of the food chains there, they have the highest concentrations of mercury, PCB's and a whole suite of nasty chemicals.

This is noted in humans as well; children in the Shetland Islands are reported to have development problems associated with elevated mercury levels in their mothers' bodies, and Inuk peoples in Quebec have been reported to have Hg and PCB levels in their bodies high enough to classify them as hazardous waste!!!. (This alarms me especially, as I spend over half the year working/living in the Arctic. How toxic am I?)

I recently bought a book called 'Silent Snow', and it addresses these issues associated with chemical concentrations at high altitudes/latitudes, particularly the hermaphrodite polar bears, in detail but without being quite as dry as Carson's 'Silent Spring'. Both are excellent reads, and I recommend everyone read them.

Thanks so much for the extra information on this subject. When I first read this article I was in complete shock that a creature so critical to our ecosystem could be suffering and being effected so badly. It only stirs up my worries about our planet, societies, and lives even more.

Many researchers, from around the planet have documented this. It's a serious problem; I've personally seen it, and it frightens me that no-one takes it seriously.

"Keep on pollutin' y'all. Them so-called 'scientist' up thar don't know what-in-the-heck thar talkin' aboouut."

It's our planet. We all live on it. It's giving us warning signs. We need to listen!
