I would imagine that even those huge airliners can roll onto their side and maneuver between the buildings if necessary, or to one side of the towers for that matter. You know, cause they were a lot closer to the edges of the towers than the top...

The trouble is that when an aircraft of that size rolls onto it's side, it loses lift in pretty dramatic fashion. The engines just don't have the thrust to power through that kind of maneuver the way a fighter can.

They may roll enough to begin "threading the needle" but the result would still be catastrophic and fatal.

There was also a very similar incident in the Tom Clancy novel "Executive Orders" in which a terrorist crashed a 747 into the Capital Building. That was written back in '94, or '96 I believe. It was the first thing I thought of after 9/11 happened. Well, second thought after "Oh, crap!"

You're right about that. A pilot can try to compensate with the rudder a little bit, but on a plane that size it isn't going to make much difference.
