One thing that stuck out to me was that she didn't know her little boy was not in school until she called.
They always call home, and certainly did in 1979.

My kids elementary school has this new home calling system where a computer calls and reports the child wasn't at school. I say wasn't because, the system doesn't call until late in the day. If my child isn't at school, I'd like to be informed at 9:00 am. or as soon as humanly possibly. But 4:00 pm? WTF?
