Harvey Milk day to become reality?
Harvey Milk day to become reality?
Today, 22 May, many people celebrate the birthday of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist who was murdered in San Francisco in November 1978. California legislators are trying to get today officially recognized as "Harvey Milk Day."

This is ridiculous.
It's only because he was murdered and because he wes gay.
He certainly didn't do anything to deserve such an honor.

I thought he was a gay rights activist and not just a gay dude who was murdered.

Like a lot of other people.

He was murdered and his murderer was the first to use the 'junk food' defense. That is his claim to fame.

A LOT more people deserve their own day more than he does.

Yeah.

Same with that Martin Luther King guy.

As I'm sure you're aware, Milk's significance lay not so much in his murder as in his standing for and winning political office whilst being open about his sexuality.

That's difficult enough in 2009, but to be the first to do it and to do it in 1977 is hugely significant in terms of equality.

You are really comparing the two?

MLK was instrumental in the civil rights movement.

Milk admitted to being gay.

How can you compare that?

I'll grant you Milk was brave to come out as he did, but it was San Francisco, more progressive than most cities at the time, and it was at a time when it quite possibly helped more than hurt him.
