Christian fundamentalism, like all fundamentalisms, is a narcissistic faith, concerned most of all with the wrongs suffered by the righteous and the purification of their ranks.
Christian fundamentalism scares me just as much as muslim fundamentalism does.

Christian fundementalism scares me more, considering that they are more in our midst then muslim fundamentalism.

I wonder if there are buddhist fundamentalists?

That was a fascinating article. I had no idea that fundamental evangelicals were so prominent in the American military. I enjoyed the different perspectives of it given through the interviews with soldiers.

I agree. Any sort of fundamentalism is scary.

The soldiers guffawed. JESUS KILLED MOHAMMED was about to cruise into the Iraqi night.
On that note, it's time for them to leave Iraq.

Soldiers like this are sowing hate and anger where there hadn't been any.

I'm pretty sure that if Jesus was alive and saw this sort of behavior, he'd be quite angered and disgusted.

It blew his mind so much he had to repeat it, his voice picking up a speed and enthusiasm that bordered on joy. “He”—the Lord—“builds up an entire nation”—Iraq or Vietnam, Afghanistan or Pakistan, who are you to question why?—“just to destroy them! To show somebody else”—America, a young man guided to college by God, distrustful of his own choices—“that they’re in grace.”
This scares me. This really, really scares me. It bothers me because it also removes any personal responsibility from these soldiers. Kill a bunch of civilians? Well, if they think their god said so, then it must be okay. This attitude is not going to help make the world a better place for our descendants!

Though Dubya said "I was just following orders" is no excuse for any actions committed by an Iraqi, I guess these Christian soldiers think this is just fine. Are they even aware that they may be prosecuted for these actions if caught?

Not sure, it might be a contradiction in terms, since Buddhism is so tolerant?

Granted, this is just a wikipedia article, but:

The 14th Dalai Lama has agreed that there exist also extremists and fundamentalists in Buddhism

It appears to be so.

People like this are a shame to their beliefs and an embarrassment to people who quietly go through life with private and personal beliefs.

Fundamentalism wouldn't be a problem if the source material didn't have some twisted concepts in it, I wish the religious majority in America was Wicca.

this is so disgusting I can't even read to the end of it. 'lets insult our enemies religion, that'll make them submit' f**king great attitude.

“The idea of separation of church and state?” an Air Force Academy senior named Bruce Hrabak says. “There’s this whole idea in America that it’s in the Constitution, but it’s not.”

“Now,” Hrabak said, “we’re underground.” Then he winked.

“There’s a spiritual world, and oftentimes what happens in the physical world is representative of what’s happening in the spiritual,” an academy senior (a “firstie,” in the school parlance) named Jon Butcher told me one night at New Life, a nearby megachurch popular with cadets.

Hahahaha...How about I know both of these guys, and they're both...hmmm...not the smartest guys around.

This is the biggest rehash story I've ever seen. I can't believe this is being written about again.

Mountains out of molehills, at least now. The entire thing. Whatever makes you feel special I guess.

I had (just graduated woot) many atheist friends at the Academy, and I'm pretty sure they gave to me just as well as they may have gotten, if at all. Right before I left, a friend of mine was handing around a copy of Religulous, and talking about it often. I wasn't offended, I didn't run to MEO and cry.

Many people there are afraid to say anything about religion. That article is a joke, written by those who have no idea about the current climate at the Academy except for the one they want to see.

I heard Mikey Weinstein speak at the Academy last year, and he was an a*****e. He had some good points, about needing to caution ourselves against portraying that we are "crusaders" or in a "holy way", but his entire attitude was that of vindictive condemnation.

Everything he said implied that those present were the worst perpetrators of his greatest fears. I stayed for the whole thing too.

When a fundamentalist Christian group kills 3,000 people in one attack and then tenaciously fights against a democratic world in two wars, then you can say you're more scared. What a ridiculous statement.

*cue some retort about the Crusades*

I will refrain from "some retort" about the Crusades, which were in any case using a religious excuse to serve another purpose. And they were disastrous for everybody and every religion involved.

But I will agree that my statement referred to was "ridiculous" if you could convince me that very many muslims were not killed in Bosnia (Srebrenica, etc.) just because they were muslims. I don't want to count and compare dead people, I think it's wrong to kill even a single person for a so-called religious purpose.
