Attempting to erase history Posted: 6 months ago by bornbad
Producer Antony Thomas showed the iconic 'Tank Man' photo to a group of undergraduates at Beijing University - in 1989 the university had been the nerve center of the student movement that inspired the nationwide uprising. None of the students knew what the photo was.

Really wish we could do more to help over there, and in N. Korea. Even just air-dropping little mp3 players with the Churchill quote:

"History is written by the victors."

I watched an HBO documentary on the bombing of Hiroshima. Most youths over there have NO idea it ever happened. History is suppressed in some countries, I suppose!

It reminds me of 1984. I remember when I read that book and the part about how they would tell the public that they were allies with one continent but not the other and that the situation changed every few years I thought that could never happen, the older people must remember and tell the younger generation. Scary how easy it is to erase history. If one generation doesn't tell the next, then the saying "history is written by the victors" really becomes true.

True that^, but I believe truths eventually become known. Hooray for freedom of speech and freedom of the press, I am so glad to live in the U.S. of A.

Eventually.
Say, what was the last time any suppressed information surfaced in the US? Well, I guess in the US there is not so much of that.
I came from a country where a "mild suppression" was in practice. Unwanted information was told only in late night news and/or in 10 second quick clip coverage. That worked darn well too.

I do think they'll be released (read 'leaked') but only in time/eventually. Large-scale events and atrocities involving too many people to silence always are. (Nazi war crimes trials, pedophile priests, Watergate, etc).

I was just pointing out that its naive to think that the your country is superior in human rights compared to other countries.
