This is the merely a stamping of the feet because of their feelings of impotence caused by their dwindling ability to dictate morality to the masses.
They hate it when they find themselves less and less in a position of power when it comes to dictating and imposing their own morals on people.
Cases like this are a welcome progression in the face of the backwards, judgemental stance the church has taken for years

Of all groups of people that have room to speak, the Catholic Church--known for priest/altar boy relations--falls at the bottom of that list.
