« maven : In which case, the entire procedure would be outlawed. There is NO medical need to modify a vagina to 'pre-sex' condition.
I don't see an absolute medical need to modify a vagina, but there isn't a medical need for breast augmentation either. Plus, in some areas, if a woman isn't a virgin when she gets married or engaged - even if it's due to rape - her family will kill her for dishonoring them. So in my mind, when those situations occur (and they do) it's a life saving operation.

Actually, there's an awful lot of evidence that not having reconstructive surgery after a double mastectomy does a lot of damage to a woman's self esteem.

And you'll note, killing a non-virginal bride is a SOCIAL condition, not a medical one.

I said it was life saving, not necessarily a medical need. And there's an awful lot of evidence that many breast augmentations have nothing to do with double mastectomies :)

« chinook : ...because it's not part of the oath?
In regards to 'do no harm' it is MOST CERTAINLY part of the oath. The exact words are 'to abstain from doing harm' but the meaning is the same.

They take the hippocratic oath and as a doctor they follow it. When you have the knowledge and responsibility of a Medical professional people rely on you to help them. She trusted her doctors to be able to do the operation without putting her into a life and death situation. Yeah, she signed a waiver but although that waiver gave the doctor an 'out' it didn't excuse his cavalier attitude towards her life.

Are we allowed to surgically remove our eyes? How about our children's? Can we sign a 'waiver' and lop off an ear? Why then can we put ourselves in situations of extreme danger without someone saying "No. I won't do that, it would probably hurt you."

Medical ethics boards deal with doctors who don't properly care for the safety and well being of their patients all the time. These doctors should lose their license for willingly allowing this girl to do what she did. They knew better. And if they didn't, that is another good reason to remove their license to practice.

Tragluk, you're presuming the doctors in Russia take the same oath as those in the States. Heck, that those in the States take it!

They don't. Most all schools take something similar, but even the original does not mean 'do no harm.'

Oath stuff

Wiki Oath stuff

You'll note the original version also says they won't do abortions or surgery. Or have sex. Or tell anyone their 'secrets'. Even in the modern version, it does not say 'do no harm' as a mandate.
