Even Now, There’s Risk in ‘Driving While Black’
Even Now, There’s Risk in ‘Driving While Black’
The experience of being mistaken for a criminal is almost a rite of passage for African-American men. Security guards shadow us in stores. Troopers pull us over for the crime of “driving while black.” Nighttime pedestrians cower by us on the streets. picked by bornbad 6 months ago

Bureau of Justice statistics:

At midyear 2008, there were 4,777 black male inmates per 100,000 black males held in state and federal prisons and local jails, compared to 1,760 Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 727 white male inmates per 100,000 white males.

...

Is it really the white people's fault that the black people are perceived to be criminals?

Perhaps the author should look to his own neighborhood and tell the others of his race that if they don't want to be treated like criminals, they should better stop BEING criminals.

I'm not saying it's the college graduates fault that he's discriminated against. It's not the business owners fault that in his mind 10 black teens were just arrested for shoplifting. It's the 10 teens who are at fault. They're the ones who shined a negative light on the college student's race.

Came in here to say the exact same thing, Trag. I expected to be downvoted into oblivion, too, because our view isn't the politically correct one.

I think the intelligent black folks on here know the real story. New York crime rates in 2006 showed that the black population consisted of only 24 percent of New York City’s population but they committed 68.5 percent of all murders, rapes, robberies, and assaults in the city. I don't have more recent stats so who knows if it's gotten better or worse, but I doubt it got better. That pretty much points the same finger as tragluk's stats.

I didn't take the time to do the full math here but I think that comes out to a black person being more than 4 times more likely to commit a crime than a non-black in New York City..and that's "non-black" not "white". So who do you think _I'M_ looking out for when I walk those streets?

I'm not saying racists don't exists...I've met a few...but folks like us are more "realists" than "racists".
