I imagine you could claim that he knew he wouldn't find anything in the probe so instead of announcing that ACORN is guilt-free, he claims the probe was stopped, knowing that people will assume a conspiracy was in place to protect ACORN.

That is one possibility.

The other is that there are too many that would stand to lose if some of ACORNS more outlandish actions were brought to light.

The latter sounds rather more probable.

Of course there are far more possibilities than just the two...

(Too bad we can't look into more corruption cases. Lord knows there are tons of them)
