 Atheist summer camp
Atheist summer camp
Richard Dawkins is helping to launch Britain’s first summer retreat for non-believers, where children will have lessons in evolution and sing along to John Lennon’s Imagine.

The five-day camp in Somerset (motto: “It’s beyond belief”) is for children aged eight to 17 and will rival traditional faith-based breaks run by the Scouts and church groups. picked by bingo 5 months ago

Totally, totally biased article. I'm actually ashamed that it's from a respected British newspaper.

It's referring to Camp Quest of which there are already several in the states.

Instead of singing Kumbiya and other campfire favourites, they will sit around the embers belting out “Imagine there’s no heaven . . . and no religion too”.
Total bulls**t. A vague attempt at mockery and a cheap shot.

Amazing how polarised this article is to a review of The Best Kids Camps In Britain also published by The Times

It seems so, although the idea of sending my kid off to sing John Lennon songs actually seems kind of nice, but yeah, after minutes upon minutes of research, that paragraph seems more out of the Daily Mail.

The UK tabloids' performance metric seems to be digging through trash bins, and measuring how much coffee and tea have been sputtered upon their pages. But it's not the first time a respected news authority has allowed a tabloid-esque story to run, especially from under Murdoch's leathery wings.

Well... you don't have to be an atheist to:
- accept that evolution is a reality;
- like John Lennon songs, including "Imagine";
- “encourage children to think for themselves, sceptically and rationally”;
- debunk "phenomena such as crop circles" (not so sure about telepathy, or what it has to do with religion, anyway...).

Canoeing and swimming and various other activities (probably including various type of mischief too!) is a bonus, of course.

But having camps to try and convince kids NOT to believe in something, anything, seems even more perverse than trying to convince them to follow some narrowly-defined religion.

All of which has almost nothing to do with belief.

Agree wholeheartedly.

But you do get that these camps aren't doing that, right?

I'm reminded of reading an article years ago about Atheists who started Homeschooling their kids and were complaining that all the home school co-operative groups in their area (Oklahoma...the "buckle of the Bible belt) were too religious. I thought "start your own group...duh!"

Although I don't agree with atheists, I do applaud their starting their own camps instead of complaining about the religious ones.
