To understand the units of time we need to investigate the number systems of ancient civilizations. How did the Sumerians count to 12 on one hand and to 60 on two? What advances did the Babylonians make and how did they use this number system for measurement? And what refinements did the Egyptians make to time measurement to give us the system we still use today? picked by AutumnLotus 5 months ago tags 60 minutes hour time number system |

Time has been studied by philosophers and scientists for 2,500 years. Astronomer Carl Sagan had it right when he said that time is “resistant to simple definition.” Lots of us think we know what time is, but it is hard to define. You can not literally see or touch time, but you can see its effects. The evidence that we are moving through time is found in everything – our bodies a... read full post picked by kakana 4 months ago 4 comments edit related share entertainment |

Australian scientists say they have achieved the world's most accurate measurement of the fundamental unit of light intensity. Errol Atkinson and colleagues from the National Measurement Institute have refined the measurement of the candela, the basic unit of brightness, to eliminate all but 0.1 per cent of uncertainty. picked by AutumnLotus 1 year ago 1 comments edit related share science |

By looking at sun-like stars in their infancy, researchers have used a powerful telescope and a new bag of tricks to peer at planet-formation under way. The result: Three wildly different setups, suggesting our solar system is perhaps neither unique nor all that strange. picked by AutumnLotus 1 year ago 0 comments edit related share science |

My 7 y/o is suddenly obsessed with how many seconds are in a minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes etc. She is learning about time. It got me thinking...how old am I in seconds? Well now I know. I feel OLD! 1,166,832,000 Seconds...give or take a few. It's just mindless fun. picked by eljay 2 years ago 8 comments edit related share entertainment |
We tend to have bad measurement systems here in the US. We've got a temperature scale where water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 (it's zero and 100 for the rest of the world.) And none of our measurements are compatible with our base10 numbering system. Twelve inches in a foot? 5280 feet in a mile? I mean...come on... picked by JDRucker 1 year ago 4 comments edit related share science |
According to Professor Paul Davies "Scientists have no doubt whatever that it is possible to build a time machine to visit the future". Since the publication of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, few, if any, scientists would dispute that time travel to the future is perfectly possible. picked by shredtone 3 years ago 0 comments edit related share science |

Daylight Saving Time ends in most of the United States a 2AM on Sunday, November 1st (Hawaii and Arizona have been on standard time all summer). It makes you wonder how we ever got our clocks coordinated in the first place. Believe it or not, standard time and time zones were the railroad industry’s idea. picked by bingo 4 weeks ago 0 comments edit related share plime.com |
Planets may be present in a quadruple star system 150 light years from Earth, according to Spitzer Space Telescope observations. The system, called HD 98800, consists of two pairs of stars in which the partners in each pair orbit one another closely. The pairs themselves travel around each other on a very elongated path. picked by AutumnLotus 2 years ago 0 comments edit related share plime.com |
Radar images have shown that a near-Earth object is actually a triple system; an asteroid with two small moons. NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar on June 12 and 14, 2009, revealed the new information about Asteroid 1994 CC. It came within 2.52 million kilometers (1.56 million miles) on June 10. Prior to the flyby, very little was known about this celestial body. 1994 CC is only the second triple... read full post picked by AutumnLotus 4 months ago 0 comments edit related share science |

Time is no longer a simple line from the past to the future, in a four dimensional world consisting of three dimensions of space and one of time. Instead, Roger Highfield envisages the passage of history as curves embedded in a six dimensionals, with four of space and two of time. picked by DrNothing 2 years ago 4 comments edit related share science |
