General Motors is laying off workers, but giving them retirement benefits instead of severence pay. This could lead to all kinds of problems down the line, as GM is not obligated to contribute to its retirement fund until 2013.

General Motors Corp. said its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car should get 230 miles per gallon of gasoline in city driving, more than four times the mileage of the current champion, the Toyota Prius.

You've been laid off, but you figure unemployment will get you through the time you need to find a job. That is true unless you work for a company that claims "religion" status. They don't have to pay the taxes everyone else does - including unemployment taxes which means you're out on the street.
