Maybe it couldn't back when the adage rose to popularity, but then, the things that make people happy didn't cost much in those times.

In life I've alternated between being wealthy and being poor because I've found the contrast gives me more in life.

People who are always wealthy have too much input of good things in their life and don't know what it is to be without, and so they seek ways to experience more pleasure than the average folk, turning to making others unhappy and drugs and all sorts of not good for them things.

Borderline poor people, I believe, experience more net happiness because the squalor they live in is such a contrast to any happy event that when something good happens it makes them feel so much better.

That's not the same for very poor people, who may be unhappy their whole lives.

My most pricey purchase ever was the Prius I bought for my hubby last year. We're both ecstatic with the purchase.

I'm usually a frugal person, and get a lot of enjoyment out of finding the best deal on things I buy, or finding unusual items to buy.
