I'd want to see the opinions and findings of more than one "expert" before I decide. Fascinating, though.

Absolutely. This is hardly definitive.

It may well be a hoax though considering this dates to the middle ages.

It might also be a covering from a body that someone conveyed for a time to a suitable burying place/town.

I think the latter is a likely possibility.
