Swearing can reduce the feeling of pain
Swearing can reduce the feeling of pain
The study by researchers at Keele University found that volunteers were able to withstand pain for longer when they swore compared to when they used words which were not offensive. picked by kakana 5 months ago

But there's probably some underlying problem they need to deal with for eg. abusive swearing.

Is it the actual words or the power behind them? I mean when we swear in pain we often yell louder than when we say less offensive words. What difference does it make if I say "s**t" or "crap" means the same thing...second will even offend. And in some instances neither will offend. For some they aren't swear words, but something you step in.

I guess "f**k" is a better example (boy the censor's going nuts on this post) of a swear word that will offend all, and "frickkin' hell" just doesn't do it for some. I don't know...there must be more to it. Maybe it is only powerful if you think it offends.

I wonder if the study had people say the "table-words" as if they were offensive.

BR**N! W**D! V**NISHED! M**S-PRO**CED! H**VY!

That would have been interesting to see.

A close friend of mine has never been the type to swear. I'd known her for years and never heard her cuss.

We were in 7th grade home economics. She was carrying a plate, and it fell, shattering. Loudly. Everyone in the room shut up, just in time to hear this sweet, polite girl say "Fuck" very loudly.

wait, so did they really induce pain in an experiment? Sounds a bit like torture...

plus I'm sure it has more to do with the releasing of mental anxiety. Damn it all, I can f**king swear if I please.

Strangely satisfying.

It's all in the name of science. So it's allowed.

I took some acting lessons as a kid (11-12), along with Nancy, a girl I knew from my neighborhood. She had the kind of crass, redneck family who reveled in their redneckitude (as anyone should). We were rehearsing a sketch once, and she dropped her line, and ad-libbed one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed. The written dialogue was something like:

Other girl: But that's the thing, dear! The postman never showed up!

Nancy (smugly): That may be because they don't run the mail on holidays, you poor thing.

What we got was:

Other girl: But that's the thing, dear! The postman never showed up!

Nancy (pregnant pause): Well I'll be damned.

The whole place fell apart. Of course it was said, as it is in the South, glibly, and as one word: Wellahbedam. Coming from an 11-year old girl, that was fantastic.

It was done on volunteers, so no harm done.
