 Doing Without Money (on purpose)
Doing Without Money (on purpose)
Daniel Suelo lives in a tiny cave in Utah. Instead of working for money, he spends his time foraging for food because he believes that living without money is a better way. Nine years ago, after volunteering with the Peace Corps, and living in Thailand and India, he decided to be a “vagabond in America”.

Is this a grand experiment or a retreat from reality? picked by Bingo 4 months ago

If he did it without half relying on the system he denounces (almonds from a friend's orchard, friends who feed him, left behind clothes, etc.) I would say bravo.

I considered doing this, but then I decided I enjoy having teeth and clean fingernails.

Also, I'd love to see this guy's credit report. You know who pays when he goes to the hospital?

He's making do with what's available...Sounds like he's doing things as 'naturally' as possible. Using discarded clothing, and picking almonds from a tree is hardly hypocritical. Look around at the natural world...Birds, Hermit Crabs, Bears..I'm sure there are more...all forage, and take advantage of what's available.

He deserves respect as a person who is leading by example.

HE WASN'T ALWAYS THIS WAY. SUELO graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in anthropology, he thought about becoming a doctor, he held jobs, he had cash and a bank account. In 1987, after several years as an assistant lab technician in Colorado hospitals, he joined the Peace Corps and was posted to an Ecuadoran village high in the Andes. He was charged with monitoring the health of tribespeople in the area, teaching first aid and nutrition, and handing out medicine where needed; his proudest achievement was delivering three babies. The tribe had been getting richer for a decade, and during the two years he was there he watched as the villagers began to adopt the economics of modernity. They sold the food from their fields—quinoa, potatoes, corn, lentils—for cash, which they used to purchase things they didn't need, as Suelo describes it. They bought soda and white flour and refined sugar and noodles and big bags of MSG to flavor the starchy meals. They bought TVs. The more they spent, says Suelo, the more their health declined. He could measure the deterioration on his charts. "It looked," he says, "like money was impoverishing them."
....microcosm of modern society.

Yeah but what I'm saying is that he's not. Leading by example should not involve any help from the rest of this terrible terrible society.

"Yeah, all these products, this consumerism, it's so bad. I really like this jacket I picked up off of the street though. Hey, can I have some almonds from your pesticide powered orchard? I'm running low".

The only thing that separates this guy from a standard bum is that he doesn't drink and can talk a big show.

If he lived like a straight Native American then that would be something.

If there were the same amount of natural resources available, and land that wasn't fenced off and owned by everyone, then he may have more of a chance.

He's got to make due with what's available.
