But imagine how much deeper in debt Americans would be if they swapped the stock headphones, for say, a pair of Shure E5Cs, or even midrange headphones, like E2C-grade headphones...

iPods were the thing that revived the dying sub-$20 headphone industry. Everyone knows that the stock headphones:
1. will get you mugged in cities
2. sound like crap and fits like pieces of petrified crap.
But they still buy crappy $20 headphones anyways...not that their 64/128kb/s mp3s really matter though...

So yeah, iPod headphones are a necessary evil to those who enjoy good sound, as sheeple just go all ga-ga at the "rob me white" without regard to sound.
