Strong perfume hospitalises 34 in Texas
Strong perfume hospitalises 34 in Texas
When scores of workers at a Texas call centre started feeling sick and dizzy, it was feared that carbon monoxide or another toxic substance had leaked into the building.

However, it later turned out that a particularly strong brand of perfume was to blame. picked by AutumnLotus 4 months ago

I would love to read that this ended up being a massive, passive-aggressive move against a coworker who wore too much perfume.

Someone sprayed perfume at work? Oh lord, I'd gag. Loudly. In front of them.

There are a few people in my building that I can't walk behind because of the wave of floral nausea. There's one woman who wears so much that it will linger in the hallway a good 10 minutes after she walks by, even outside if it's a calm day.

*rubs eyes, sniffles*

It's a good thing none of these people do field work. They'd have to go home in the waaahmbulance after 10 minutes!

*thinks back to one summer, 3.5 months, hot weather and NO shower. We smelled. Bad.*

Lt Worley said that the situation had escalated because of "psychosomatic behaviour" and "contagious fear".
The fact that this type of behavior or condition exists kind of amazes me. Our brains are so weird: "ZOMG EVERYBODY PANIC!!!"

There's a serious difference between horrible body odor and too much perfume/cologne. Neither is pleasant, but 'natural' BO seldom causes an allergic reaction.

Does this mean I can call BS on the girl I worked with who said we were so smelly we made her nauseous and headachey?

I've heard this so many times from people, that our stinky selves were migraine-inducing that I assumed it was all strong smells, not just perfumes or gasoline.

I would, yes. :D

I can only speak for myself, but BO has never given me a headache. And only once, nauseous, and that was somebody who I think failed to remove clothing for other bodily functions, and the refuse was literally rotting in his pants.

I worked at a call center for several years. We had a strict "no fragrance" policy because the internal ventilation was so poor that any smell was just concentrated in the building.

Anyone wearing any discernable scent was given the choice between washing up and returning to one's desk unscented, and being sent home. And yes, it was a fire-able offense.
