Sounds great and it may be the beginning of solving the problem of drivers that do not have access to an electrical outlet for charging.

The car will have an on-board generator to recharge the batteries after 40 miles, and the generator will be powered by gasoline.

A good start.

Chevrolet Volt Expects 230 mpg in City Driving
The electric-drive Chevrolet Volt is expected to get a rating of at least 230 miles per gallon in city driving, General Motors Co. announced this morning.
This sound like it hasn't been tested yet... Until it is tested, you can't say it ACTUALLY gets 230mpg...

GM CEO Fritz Henderson made the announcement at the Warren Tech Center with a Volt as a backdrop, noting the campaign. “There’s a reason the outlet is smiling,” he said.
I truly hope that is not a 2, a 3 and a Smiling outlet signifying:

"OH, You thought it was 230? NOOOOO... it's more like a 23... The smiling outlet? That signifies how rich you will make your electric company by charging this every night...

I think it is a good idea to go with a generator.

Electricity is so much more efficient then gasoline alone, and producing electricity today is also incredibly efficient.
So this 2 step drive is indeed a step forward.

I like that they are calling the model the Volt.

Meh, considering the way the EPA measures plug-in hybrid MPG, that number isn't nearly as impressive as it sounds. Running on gasoline alone, it actually gets worse gas mileage than the Prius.

I think statements like this:
“A car that gets more than 100 miles per gallon is a significant step in the reinvention of the auto industry and GM is and will continue to be a leader in that reinvention."
are dishonest (no matter what the EPA guidelines are). The Volt gets about 50MPG, and 230"MPG+E".

More on the economics of the Volt here.

But how expensive will it be? Typically it's not worth it unless you are driving 200 miles a day

Will it hit the market? Will it be lease only? Will GM pull it from the market if too many consumers like it?

YMMV, remember. I like the actual solid 45mpg combined we get with our Prius, which is a good sized car, quite cushy inside, and WORKS. And we LIKE the look! Like a DRD from Farscape!

So it saves you gas, but costs you electricity, which is usually made from coal. Great.
