What she did was wrong. Messed up. Certainly not the behavior of a loving mother. I doubt the father thought she would do something as dramatic and disturbing, though leaving a child in the hands of a coke addict is not great parenting skills.

However...This is basically the same thing that counts as 'female circumcision'.

And I don't recall hearing the males comment with as much anger about THAT.

We're supposed to be a civilized society tho, maven, and the atrocity of female circumcision seems very remote not only culturally but geographically to most people. Just like other tragedies in far-away places in the world, it doesn't affect most people to the same degree.
