Multiple sclerosis successfully reversed in animals
A new experimental treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) completely reverses the devastating autoimmune disorder in mice, and might work exactly the same way in humans. picked by kakana 4 months ago

Wow, just wow! A single dose reversing a devastating disease. If this is true and works against other auto-immune diseases this would be the medical discovery of the decade I think. A big high-five to the scientists on this one.

It seems that a lot of experiments have been successful in mice. Let's hope it's also successful with humans too.

Me too, one of my former coworkers had to quit his job because of MS.

I really hope that they can get the funding and support to do human trials on this. So often good things die because they couldn't get that.

This is fantastic.

Why do scientists devote so much time to curing diseases in mice when they should be looking for cures for humans instead.

Why are mice so important!

Wow, that's good news! Definately a discovery that should get funded for further research. Even if it only stays with MS, it's still a disease that's destroying lives and needs curing.

It would be life changing for me if this is a cure. I was diagnosed with MS in 2003 and just finished a 3 day steroid treatment to help regain vision in one of my eyes. To be able to just live my life without the threat of possible disability looming in my future would just be amazing.

I think this is just absolutely fantastic. Three cheers for the McGill team!! I really wonder how long they spent naming their protein hormone GIFT.

I'm also just wondering where the comments about how scientists are always wrong or always get it wrong are hiding, especially in light of this article, where things could still go wildly awry. I've seen so many of those comments here lately. I guess it's only evolutionary biologists that "get it wrong" often? *ducks*

read in the paper just today that a couple wrote the Indian Pres to euthanize all 4 of their sons with Docs help as they all been suffering from age 5 (correction:muscular dystrophy.) and are not ages 10-16 and the doctors say there is nothing more they can do and they are broke. And the Pres is considering it (no does not says she is and its illegal here so i guess its just a sad incident)

Sad story. Hopefully someone in the medical field will let them know MD mostly strikes males and that their daughter will probably be fine. How devastating to have it hit all four boys.

So very sad. I hope publication of their plight leads to charitable help for them.

Thanks, tgkprog.

Mice and humans catch similar diseases and can be treated in similar ways. Any information we can learn from mice with diseases helps us treat human diseases as well. Plus, mice are used to test medications because they're expendable, while human patients are not.

If all the mice die of cancer and AIDS then there will be nothing left to do the research on.
