Swimmers are told to wear burkinis
Swimmers are told to wear burkinis
Under the rules, swimmers – including non-Muslims – are barred from entering the pool in normal swimming attire.
Instead they are told that they must comply with the "modest" code of dress required by Islamic custom, with women covered from the neck to the ankles and men, who swim separately, covered from the navel to the knees. picked by kakana 3 months ago

I despair, I really do. They come to this country through choice and then expect their customs to be imposed! If here then do as others do!

It's their pool. You can't really have a custom imposed upon you if you choose not to go to the pool.

Yeah, a business promoting a specialized service to a growing client base. Seems pretty alarmist.

I really do not see what the big deal is. If I am reading it right, they have special sessions where these rules are enforced. It is just allowing for a time for Muslim men and women to have an opportunity to swim. Whats the problem with that?

sounds like Britain's just doing this to stick it to France.

also, i've been thinking about this burqa/burkini thing, and i think the idea of countries banning burqas would only be offensive if men wore burqas too.

The problem is that Muslims increasingly impose their intolerant notions upon civilized countries -- making demands for all kind of exceptions.

It's the pool today, the local park tomorrow, and the beach the day after.

It is not just their dress, which often includes head-to-toe coverage with only a slit for the eyes, but also their insistence on having Sharia law (Islamic law) with their own courts and their own justice system. You give them a finger, and they demand a hand. That's the problem.

Islam is an intolerant religion. The vast majority of its followers believe the world should be ruled by Islamic law. You only have to take a look at all the problem spots in the wordl -- most of them Islamic countries -- to see what sort of mess that creates.

Incidentally, in those countries people aren't anywhere near as flexible in trying to accommodate the demands of others when it comes to observing their own cultural or religious practices.

For the most part you are right. But I live in one of "those countries" and have also stumbled upon a topless beach. When I asked the Muslims there (because I was very surprised) they replied that it was because their European guests prefer it that way. Granted I also know that 10 years ago any woman daring to expose a shoulder would have been escorted back to her hotel to change.

What about the Spanish inquisition, that wasn't all too tolerant.

This = not that

The Spanish inquisition was a bad thing. Let's hope people have learned from history, and will now put some limits on a religion that is known for its hatred and intolerance toward all who reject its prophet.

I know. I have also stayed at hotels in Muslim countries where Muslims served me -- and more often than not, themselves -- alcoholic drinks.

Money covers a host of sins.
