There will probably be a lot of old style ones dropped onto Craigslist/Pawn shops/classifieds from people who *need* to have the latest version. Pick one of them up, bang in a good sized hard drive and you're off and ready to go.

Oh, no need Pocky... I have a PS2 Slim... which is backwards compatible... so unless the price on the PS3 drops dramatically by 50%, I will think about re-thinking my decision...

*Cherishes his partially backwards-compatible launch PS3*

Even so, the choice that backwards-compatibilty is gone, is not a very big loss. And no Linux OS ? Well, pretty much no-one except for a bunch of tech savvy geeks used it.

The PS3 slim will eventually be mine, but not now. As long as my current PS3 still works, I see no reason in buying a slim just yet.

Screw playstation. I was a ps1 and 2 devotee for years. Then they delayed their system for forever while Xbox came out with a quality product at a decent price (though it was a bit pricey at first too). THEN ps3 comes out with like 10 games available for an unbelievably high price. And now, their "slim" version is still at least 300 dollars? Are you kidding me? Screw them.

And the X360 is cheap ? Considering how much stuff you have to buy to have the same basic functionality the PS3 has out the box, you're really cheaper with the PS3. Wifi adapter for the X360 is 50 bucks, plus for online play is another 50 bucks a year, and the now cancelled HD DVD drive would've brought you back another 50 buck (initially 130 bucks).

In terms of games: If you loved the games on the Playstation, it is hard to find something comparable on the X360. The games library is pretty different from eachother.

40 cheaper than the slim PS3 for the Elite system. Has everything bundled in.

OK, so it doesn't have Blu-Ray but given how awful the PS2 was at playing DVDs I don't think that's a great loss.

Not that I'd choose the Xbox. Just saying about the price.

It's lighter and has a bigger hard drive. It also costs the same as the original.

Why did they make this? Are they phasing out the 80gb original? I don't get the justification for this.

Although smaller and slimmer, this thing looks awful! Sleek awesome touch sensitive buttons replaced by stupid out of place buttons, no return of backwards compatibility, crappy texture finish instead of a slick sexy shine.

Every time sony makes an "improvement" they strip off more and more of the good stuff.

Sony's making all the wrong moves this gen.

Where did you see that price? Retail for the Elite is $399. That's 100 more than the PS3.

That is $100 more for the 360 and it doesn't have everything bundled in. It does not include wifi, free online play, and the wireless controller for the 360 is controlled by replaceable batteries, if you want a built in rechargeable battery like the one built into the SIXAXIS you have to pay extra. And the PS3 is considered one of the best blu-ray players on the market.

No idea about American prices, but here an Elite is £219 (there should be a pound symbol in front of that but Plime struggles to render those on some days).

That includes 120gb HD, wireless card, HDMI cable, wireless controller, and headset.

The PS3 slim will be 300 euros which, if it isn't repriced for the UK will be £260.
