i work at a retail shop and we sell this stuff. I actually had a customer say he would not put an item unless i could open. So i attacked the packaging with a screwdriver. Who needs a can opener

Bless you for finding this! I've cut myself so many times trying to open those packages.

I hate those packages. They could make things large enough to hopefully foil shoplifters without making them impenetrable. (Is that spelled right??)

I bought a pair of these scissors to tackle the pesky packaging. They work like a charm!

I picked up one of these things at a kitchen store at the local mall and it works great. No moving parts, just drag a tiny nub over the plastic and it slices it wide open. And it doesn't cut skin either.

EDIT: didn't even notice that it was on the list in that tools link.

I've been using the kitchen scissors that came with a knife set, for some time. It cuts right through the plastic, and hasn't dulled yet. Safest and quickest thing I've ever used on those packages.

Of the things I use those for, opening plastic packaging hasn't ever been one.

I wrote a blog article a couple of years ago about this very thing. I titled it "How do old people f*cking open anything?"

This was after finally opening a $300 clamshell package of RAM for my PC -- An act which sent the fragile, easily-ruinable piece of technology flying across the room, and into a plate-glass window.

It's so true, these packages are horrible.

I believe there was a news item about it in The Netherlands when I still lived there about old people not being able to open them, and about all the injuries that come with these packages.

People suggest scissors, but the problem is that the scissors usually don't want to cut through the thick edge part, which is why you have to resort to more dangerous methods, resulting in bodily harm.

We won't speculate on how your hands got so strong.

Erm, why does the article point out the fact that lots of people get minor wounds from using sharp objects to open oyster wrap, recommend the use of a rotary can opener, then show the use of a rotary can opener AND A KNIFE in the video?

Out of curiosity, may I ask whoever downvoted me just what it was about my previous comment that was so offensive that I got downvoted twice, once in the previous comment, and once more for my comment for Jax's link to the voting site for Aviary.

I assume it's the same person, since both were downvoted by 35 points. I'm also assuming that it's the previous comment, since it's the more recent comment among the two, although I really can't figure out why it warrants a downvote.
