Community service seems like a win-win in cases like that. At the last animal rescue I worked for, I would have to field calls, where practically every day, you'd get an old, retired person with some crazy conspiracy theory about why their animals got taken away.

Finally, you learn that they just don't have anyone to talk to.

I work in customer service and I can attest that old people call all the time just because they have no one else to talk to.

Often they'll make up problems that have no resolution just to keep you on the phone. Some of them get really good at making up fictitious problems to keep you on the phone with them longer.
