Chicks ground up alive, caught on video(careful@work)
Chicks ground up alive, caught on video(careful@work)
The egg industry is known as one of the cruelest and inhumane on the planet. But an undercover video, filmed and publicized by the Chicago-based animal rights group Mercy for Animals shines the spotlight on an industry practice that is beyond horrific.

Aww...it's sad because they're so cute...

I'm betting that their death is pretty quick. I can't think of a way to do it quicker (maybe gas), and if there's no other market for them...

Nobody has the right to condemn the people or corporations who do this unless they exclusively buy eggs and chicken they know are raised and slaughtered humanely. If you buy your eggs or chicken at the grocery store then chances are pretty good that you are only enabling this behavior. Find a local farmers market and get to know your vendor. They taste so much better. The chickens, not the vendors :-p

So let me get this straight? People who are just learning about a horrific practice have no room to condemn people performing said practice because they were unknowingly contributing?

If that's how you want to straighten my statement then more power to you.

Ignorance is bliss after all.

But to appease your interpretation...

"Nobody has the right to condemn the people or corporations who do this unless they begin to exclusively buy eggs and chicken they know are raised and slaughtered humanely."

That better for you?

Yep, finally pushed me over the edge into a mostly vegetarian diet. I've been contemplating it for some time but I think I'm finally there.

I'll continue to eat rabbit, pheasant etc that I kill or that people I know kill, or truly free range chicken from a local farm but other than that I'm done.

I am getting close to that point myself.

Although I do hunt and get my meat from a local butcher who supports humane farming, I had NO idea about the male chicks or the sorting and handling.

We go thru alot of eggs here at home, too.

I am just sick.

We eat quite a lot of eggs but I get them from a friend who has a small holding. I see the hens my eggs come from nearly every day :D

Bacon.

Bacon, steak and chicken omelet, sausage, egg -and-cheese, pork rind, Slim Jim, beef jerky-ass, carne asada burrito doused in a sumptuous layer of butter, and mayonnaise.

That's better for me.

You know when it comes down to it, people eat. A lot. That means that animals need to die. A lot. They're killing on a mass scale, and sure it's horrible and disgusting but it's what makes food affordable.

That being said I wouldn't mind us all paying a dollar or two more for a dozen eggs to cover the costs of raising these industries standards.

that's part of why i'm vegan. this procedure is standard, no matter if free range or whatever. the male chicks have no use, so they are killed. surprisingly it's actually also the same with your nice neighbour who has his own small flock of hens. because he bought the hens from a breeder. and the breeder had no use for the male chicks either. technically each of your neighbour's hens had a baby brother that is now dead.
if you can deal with this stuff, feel free to continue eating eggs :/

The only problem is, as the article states, Those free range farms pay for this inhumane treatment by purchasing hens for their own farms.

Unless you Abstain from eggs completely or raise your own there is pretty much no way to avoid this. What we can do is start pressuring companies like this to use more humane practices. There is nothing wrong with condemning a company for a inhumane practice just because they provide a vital service. You don't have to be vegetarian to care about the humane treatment of farm animals.

Or buy eggs from a local small holding. That is, if there's one near you
