 How Marijuana Became Legal
How Marijuana Became Legal
Medical marijuana is giving activists a chance to show how a legitimized pot business can work. Is the end of prohibition upon us? picked by nickcobb 3 months ago

Don't we need a medical condition for it?

Ah man, I loved the stuff back in the day.

I hated that I never made any sense. I used to say I would open my mouth and stupid would come out.

Totally worth it for relaxation purposes.

You still need a medical condition for it but as the article talks about there are docs who advertise their marijuana friendly practices. So if you're after a prescription you can go to one of these docs and just come up with some back pain or something.

Chronic pain is a very mismanaged thing... there's a lot of drugs out there that could help but doctors either can't prescribe them or won't prescribe them, either because they are skeptical about such reports of extreme pain, fearful of the person being an addict (even if it's legitimate), or because politicians put in place arbitrary caps on dosage levels that have nothing to do with whether it's safe or not, and all to do with "well no one really would need this high a dose unless they were addicted to it". If you have chronic pain and it's that extreme, it's very difficult finding a doctor who will even take you seriously. This just is a double-whammy because it's got the stigma of being an illegal drug, along with the anti-marijuana propaganda that's been going on for years. I know one personally who is going through this and it's horrible to watch him go through the same struggles day after day just because of stupid things like this.

This should not and never should be about those who want to use it for recreation. If anything, those that treat this issue in that manner hurt the cause because it isn't helping, and is most likely hurting, the effort to show that marijuana can be a legitimate drug for treating chronic pain. It has a lot of good that it can do, but we have to work past its stigma. And we have to make sure that it's controlled properly so that people do not abuse it and hurt its ability to be accessible to those who need it (illustrated by what I said above). I really hope that it becomes more accepted, and that people take this seriously.

You know, when they were talking about legalizing marijuana for medical purposes only I was one of those in the back that was cautioning about "the slippery slope" and how it was just going one step closer to legalizing it for recreation.

Told ya so?

I'm still in the very small minority that feels that we shouldn't legalize cigarettes or alcohol either. It's illegal to kill yourself right? Isn't it? Haven't we proved that cigarettes and alcohol are dangerous, addictive, and deadly not only to those who use but to the people around them?

Hell, legalize marijuana. Add it to the list. Cry 'FREEDOM!' all you want while you sue the manufacturers who make an addictive product.

You realize that you need to go to a doctor to get a refill on insulin, but if marijuana is legalized you can pick it up at a 7-11?

Well last time I checked my diabetic daughter could easily kill herself with too much insulin and insulin doesnt really serve much recreational use and the last time I checked pot is a recreational drug and I can smoke enough of it to start a forest fire and still wake up without a hangover and feeling refreshed.

Also the last time I checked I still live in a society that thinks its ok to allow an individual to enjoy a legal vice or two as long as they arent hurting anybody else. I'm an individual and I reserve the right to make up my own mind about what I want to do with myself in a legal context. What would you want outlawed next? Cars, bungie jumping, unprotected sex? They can all kill you and others after all.

Oh, I hope so!

If I could legally light up, then I would not drink. I have never found cigarettes to be at all enjoyable, but I miss the good green...

if you are one of those who stride to repulse others from deadly substances, then i think you should focus your concerns on this stuff:

..not the harmless marijuana plant.

The last I checked there is no cure for your diabetic daughter and no reason why she shouldn't be able to pick up lifesaving medicine without a 'doctor's repeated scrawl.'

And with your second paragraph in mind, let's legalize cocaine and meth. Vices which would be legal since they aren't hurting anyone else. Who are we to tell the coke addict that he can't make up his own mind about what he's allowed to have in a legal context?

Oh, it's only YOUR drug of choice which is 'ok' and not theirs.

I've been carrying around my dugout in my purse for over a year...the little cigarette-shaped one-hitter lets me take one or two hits pretty much in public with no one noticing. It's the only thing that helps me with my headaches and nausea.

And I'll credit pot up and down as the reason I'm not still on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs that I can legally destroy my liver and lungs for funsies, but can't treat my medical issues with a substance that's proven to be much safer. And all because of some bulls**t yellow journalism that went down almost a century ago.

Comparing cannabis to meth and cocaine is tantamount to comparing flyswatters to hand grenades.

I'm curious, would you also support the delegalization of caffeine?

I have been hospitalized due to a caffeine overdose (which is really annoying because it's on my medical records as 'drug overdose' and gets brought up everytime I see the doctor) and my boss has been hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat due to caffeine withdrawal.

Many people think it should all be legalized, don't try to put words in people's mouths.

Interesting thought, that... if a person is going to destroy his body with drugs, he might as well be able to get good ones from the local gov't-approved drug-supply store, instead of from criminals...

Drug laws in this country (the USA) are very inconsistent. 18 for tobacco, 21 for alcohol, and everything else is criminalized. Personally, I am also one who would be for making it all illegal. Though I enjoy an alcoholic beverage now and then, if it was made illegal to buy it, I wouldn't be missing much.

The only reason tobacco is legal is because it has a history in our country and everyone liked it (until about 100 years ago, and then people started realizing how dangerous it is). Alcohol is the same reason.

Now if those two drugs had medical uses, I'd be for allowing them to be used as such. But like any other controlled substance, they would be illegal for recreational use. Like I said, legalize marijuana for medical purposes, at the very least.
