How women's bodies have been transformed in the past 60 years...
How women's bodies have been transformed in the past 60 years...
... with huge implications for our health.

What's happened to our bodies? We're two inches taller, half a stone heavier - and have gone up three shoe sizes. It's a world away from the slender physique of the 1950s Hollywood bombshells. But what has it meant for our health? picked by Bingo 3 months ago

I had no idea that the female average height was 5"2' in the '50s UK. Wonder what the average male height was?

edit: And how did I get to 6-foot 2" in America, living primarily on Spaghetti O's, Little-Debbie Star Crunch, Pop tarts, and Frosted Flakes during my 1970s upbringing?

Was I supposed to be 6-foot 4"?

I always think the British use of 'stone' as a measurement is cruel. It makes one think of something, well, huge.

As for the 1950s, people did have healthier lifestyles.

I'm too young to remember the 50s, but I understand 50s style, Marilyn Monroe lingerie is making a comeback.

<--- 5'2" 36-29-38 foot size=6.5... (not because i need a broader base for my frame... genetics plays a big part... my parents are not slender, but neither are they heavy set, and they also have larger than average feet... My mother's foot is a size 5.

38-34-40?
I love it. What's the problem?

Am I the only person who feels like both women are really quite gorgeous? And that the media (such as this article) feels the need to portray women of this size as being ugly? And can someone explain how the 1950's woman is more curvaceous? I'm all about Eisenhower era style and fashion (thanks, Mad Men), but that's because women were appreciated for having healthy curves. And frankly, I think both women have that.

Re: Curves: I read that as the 50s woman has a much more defined "hourglass" figure. See how tight her waist is? The modern girl has a more straight-line waist.

I don't know that the modern one is portrayed as ugly... just not bombshell...so maybe not gorgeous?

Either way, I think a look at the change in the modern man would be a nice comparison.

The corset must help. They're both sexy to me, either way.

Size 3 shoe? How did that happen? Now my size 10's feel huge.

I know... me too. I have long feet, and we're both young, so it can't be because of "shifting because of weight." There has to be another factor in play for that one.
